Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau is a county situated on the western coast of Africa, between Senegal and Guinea. Bissau is its capital city. The country is located in the Western Africa region. Surface area of this country is 36,125 sq km and the currency is CFA franc.

Portuguese is the official language of this country. West African languages and Creoles are also used by the native population.

History

Guinea-Bissau region was well known as center of the slave trade. During the 15th century, Portuguese explored the region, and subsequently became known as Portuguese Guinea. The region became a colony in 1879.

The independent republic of Guinea-Bissau came into existence in 1974.

The country suffered a military coup in 1980.
