Harry Gordon Selfridge

Harry Gordon Selfridge, Sr (1858 - 1947), also known as 'Earl of Oxford Street', was a US retail magnate, born in Ripon in Wisconsin. He delivered newspapers and left school at 14 years of age for a job at a bank. He become a stock boy at Marshall Field's department store in Chicago, where after 25 years became a partner. In 1906, he founded the London-based department store Selfridges, and after 20 years became one of the most respected and wealthy retail magnates in the United Kingdom.
