Hazaribagh

Hazaribagh is a district of Jharkhand state of India. The district derives its name from its headquarter town Hazaribag, which in turn derives its name from thousand gardens which were located there. "Hazar" means thousand and 'bag' means garden, and thus Hazaribag means a land of thousand gardens. It is situated at a height of 2,019 ft. above sea level. The is bounded by Gaya and Koderma in the north, Giridih and Bokaro in the east, Ranchi in the south and Palamu and Chatra in the west. It lies between Latitude 23°5' North to 24°4' North, and Longitude 85°1' East to 85°9' East. Its area is about 11165 sq kms. Around 45 per cent of Hazaribag district is forest area.

The district is a part of Chotanagpur plateau comprised of Medium Plateau, Lower Plateau and Damodar Valley. The main mountains of Hazaribag are Chandwara and Jillinja and their heights are about 2816 and 3057 feet respectively. To the south of the central plateau lies the Sugu hill which rises to 3203 feet and is separated from the Jillinga by the river Bokaro. Maran Burn hill lies south of the Damodar Valley between Hazaribag and Ranchi districts attaining a height of 3445 feet. The main rivers of this district are Damodar and Barakar. There are three subdivisions - Sadar, Barhi and Ramgarh in this district. The blocks of this district are Sadar Hazaribag, Katkam Sandi, Bishnugarh, Barkagaon, Keredari, Ichak, Churchu, Padma, Barhi, Chauparan, Barkatha, Mandu, Ramgarh, Patratu and Gola.
