Ibn Khaldun

Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406), full name Abd al Rahman ibn Khaldun, was an Arab historian and philosopher. He wrote history of the Arabs - Kitab al-ibar and al-Muqaddimah (an introduction to history). He wrote as to how people of nomadic cultures attained civilization and reached at the peak, and then fell victim of their own success and destroyed by another nomadic community.

  • The term of life of a dynasty does not normally exceed three generations. For in the first generation are still preserved the characteristic features of rough, uncivilized rural life, such as hard conditions of life, courage, ferocity, and partnership in authority. Therefore the strength of the ‘Asabiya is maintained.
  • He who finds a new path is a path-finder, even if the trail has to be found again by others; and he who walks far in advance of his contemporaries is a leader, even though centuries may pass before he is recognized as such and intelligently followed.
  • The Desert people are closer to being good than settled people because they are closer to the First State and are more removed from all the evil habits that have infected the heart of the settlers.
