James Legge
James Legge (1815–97) was a Scottish scholar of Chinese literature, born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire. He studied at King's College, Aberdeen. He was sent out as missionary to the Chinese by the London Missionary Society in 1839, laboured for 30 years at Hong-Kong, and became professor of the Chinese Language and Literature at Oxford in 1876. He edited with a translation and notes the Chinese classics, the "four Shu," and the "five King," and gave lectures on the religions of China as compared with Christianity.Nearby pages
