Jean Bernadotte
Jean Bernadotte (1763-1844), full name Jean Baptiste Jules Bernadotte, was a distinguished French soldier, born at Pau, rose from the ranks to become a marshal of France. He distinguished himself in the wars of the Revolution and the Empire. Though he became one of the Napoleon's marshals, there was constant distrust between him and Napoleon.Later, he was adopted by Charles XIII, king of Sweden in 1810. He joined the Allies as a naturalised Swede in the war against France in alliance with Russia. He became king of Sweden himself under the title of Charles XIV, and remained as such during 1818 — 1844, to the material welfare, as it proved, of his adopted country. The present royal house of Sweden was thus founded by him.
