The first newspaper appeared in Swedish in 1771. The name of that newspaper was Tidningar Utgifne Af Et Sallskap I Abo . It literally meant 'news published by a society in Abo'. The name of that society was Aurora. It was a patriotic literary group, and editor of the paper was Professor Henrik Gabriel Porthan.

Only after four years of that publication, another Finnish language newspaper launched from Turku , and its name was Suomenkieliset Tietosanomat , which literally meant 'news in the Finnish Language'.
