Kabul

Kabul is the capital city of Afghanistan. This is also the largest city of the country. It is situated on the Kabul River, at the foot of the Takht-i-Shah Hills. It is an ancient city traditionally known for its fruit and trading in carpets, camel-hair cloth, and skins.

Kabul is also the capital of a province of the same name.

It has a mild climate and is situated on an elevated plateau of great fertility, 6000 ft. in height, on the high route between Central Asia and the Punjab, once a great highway of trade, and a depôt for European goods.

The town was taken by General Pollok in 1842, avenging the death of Burnes and Macnaughten, and by General Roberts in 1879, avenging the murder of Cavagnari.
