!Kamrup District Kamrup is a district in the state of Assam in India. The District is situated between 25°46' - 26°49' North Latitude and between 90°48' and 91°50' East Longitude. It is bounded in the North by Udalguri and Baska District, in the South by Meghalaya, in the East by Darrang District and Kamrup Metropolitan District and in the West Goalpara District and Nalbari District. Assam was referred to as Kamrup in many ancient Indian literature. It was also known as Pragjyotishpur due to the astrological (Jyotish Shashtra) practices that prevailed in this part of the country during that time. However, "Kamrup" became a more predominant name in the later part of the history. After the census of 2001 the district was divided into Kamrup Metropolitan district and Kamrup District, the former comprising the metropolitan city of Guwahati and the latter the rest of the district. The district, along with Nalbari and Barpeta districts together form the Kamrup region, home to Kamrupi culture and language. Area of the Kamrup district is 2740.74 sq km.
