Koraput

Koraput is a district in the State of Orissa in India. The district is located between Lattitude : 17.4°N to 20.7°N and Longitude : 81°24'4''E to 84.2°E.

It has an Area : 8379 Sq.Km, Altitude : 2900 ft above sea level and Population : 11,77,954 as per census 2001.

There are 2 subdivisions, 14 tahsils, 14 development blocks, 226 gram panchayats, and 1997 villages, out of which 82 uninhabited.

History

The history of Koraput is traced back to 3rd century BC. It originally belonged to the atvika people who fought the Kalinga war to restore the empire's glory. The region successively came to be ruled by several dynasites - Satavahans, Ikshvakus, Nalas, Ganga kings and kings of Surya vansha. Finally became a district of Orissa state on 1st April 1936.

The origin of the name 'koraput' is obsure. However, according to Mr. R.S. Bell, former Collector Koraput, the name derives from Kora-Putti meaning "the hamlet of the nux-vomica" a tree that has once prevalent in the region. Another theory suggests that Koraput is the corrupted form of "Karaka pento", literally meaning "Hail-stone". While a folklore says koraput is named after Khora Naiko - a valiant warrior of Nandapur kingdom.
