Layamon

Layamon was a monk and an early English poet who flourished in the 12th century. He, by his own account, was a priest near Bewdley, on the Severn. He was author of a long poem or chronicle of 32,250 lines called "Brut d'Angleterre," and which is of interest as showing how Anglo-Saxon passed into the English of Chaucer.

He lived on the severn banks about 1205, near the welsh border. He wrote about the Lear who was an old king. Lear divided his kingdom between his three daughters. Layamon wrote Lear’s story down to Athelston. He was influenced by French trouveres. Whose name was Geoffrey Gaimar. He wrote about Brut (us), who was a father of all Britons and founder of New Tory on London before the Ramón came. Brutus was a great grandson of Aeneas of Troy. Accrding to his wish he become popular among the people. He wrote about Brutus thirty thousand lines, in which contains he wrote fifty French words. Layamon wrote Brutus in 1205, in which 1600 thousand lines tell us about the history of Britain from the landing of Brutus to the death of Cadwallder. Brut was a translation into Norman French of the Historia Regum Britanniae of Geoffrey of Monmouth. Its chief sources were the Roman de Brut of Wace. Layaman’s vocabulary was archaic. He wants to preserve the poetic tradition of old English poetry .He used to epic formula. He often sums up a situation. He uses alternative meter. After Layamon, Wyclif was another great writer appeared in the scene of English literature. Wyclif was a fourteenth century writer. in between Layamon and Wyclif there were many poets, we read only his or her poems. There were many poems lost because of the plague marked black death fell on the the year of 1349, 1362 and 1369. Almost one third of population were destroyed. There were people hopeless and disappointed. For this reason people returned again to the religion.
