Lemberg
Lemberg is the German name for the city Lviv in Ukraine, also Lvov or Lwów in Polish. It is an industrial city in West Ukraine. It belonged to Poland during 1340–1772, and also during 1919–39. It belonged to Austria during (1772–1918) when it was the capital of Austrian Galicia, from its central position and ready communication with rivers and railways, enjoyed an extensive trade. Polish was the prevailing language. There was a flourishing university, and of the population, a considerable number are Jews. Later, it fell in the hands of Germany during 1939-45, and the Soviet Union during 1945-91. Since 1991 it is a Ukrainian city and its cultural centre with a university that was established in 1661.Nearby pages
