Lower California

Lower California, also Baja California, is an extensive, mountainous, dry, and scarcely habitable peninsula, stretching southward from the State, in Mexican territory. This peninsula in northwestern Mexico, separates the Gulf of California from the Pacific Ocean. It borders the U.S. state of California. Agriculture is carried on in some of the valleys, and pearl and whale fisheries support some coast towns.
