Marian Anderson

Marian Anderson (1897-1993) was an American singer. She was the First African American singer to perform at the New York Metropolitan Opera House in 1955. This US opera singer was initially barred from giving concerts in the US because of the prevalent racial discrimination at that time. However, she attained international fame during her several successful European tours between 1925 and 1935. When given permission to perform in the US, she became popular there too, and flourished in there from 1936.

This first black US opera singer to perform in the Metropolitan Opera House in New York later became a delegate of the United Nations in 1958 and won the Presidential Medal for Freedom in 1963.
