New York City

New York City, but including Brooklyn, Jersey City, and other suburban places, the premier city of the American continent, and one of the wealthiest in the world. It occupies Manhattan Island (13½ miles long) and several smaller islands at the terminal confluence of the Hudson with East River, which opens into Long Island Sound. About 18 miles South of the city is Sandy Hook, where two ship channels cross the bar, and lead into the outer or lower bay, which in turn is joined by a strait to the magnificent harbour or inner bay. All approaches are strongly fortified. A suspension bridge spans East River, uniting the city with Brooklyn. The rivers and the many wharves are crowded with shipping. The old town is a busy hive of industry, with its great centres of banking and mercantile enterprise - Wall, New, and Broad Streets. The modern part of the city is a model of regularity, is traversed by great avenues 8 miles in length and 100 ft wide, the finest being Fifth Avenue. The City Hall and the Court House are of white marble. The hotels are the largest in the world. Astor library, academy of design, university, museums, art-galleries, and many other handsome buildings adorn the streets. It carries on industries of almost every description.
