Normandy

Normandy is a historical region in France, formerly a province, fronting the English Channel, North-East of Brittany. It received its name from the Northmen who, under Rollo, established themselves there in the 10th century. It was for a long time an appanage of the English crown after the Norman Conquest. After being taken and retaken, was finally lost to England in 1450. It became practically a part of France when it was taken by Philip Augustus in 1204. In 1790 the five departments of Normandy replaced the former province. Between 1956 and 2015 Normandy was divided into two administrative regions: Lower Normandy and Upper Normandy; the regions were merged into one single region on 1 January 2016, with the union of the régions of Basse-Normandie and Haute-Normandie. It is now represented by the five departments Seine-Inférieure, Eure, Orne, Calvados, and Manche, and coextensive with the former province of Normandy.
