Nur-Sultan
Nur-Sultan is the capital city of
Kazakhstan since March 2019 when it was renamed from Astana the name of the capital from 1998 to March 2019. The city was formerly called Aqmola which was changed to Astana in 1998, and Astana was changed to Nur-Sultan in 2019. Aqmola became the capital of Kazakhstan in 1997. The name Aqmola came into existence in 1992 when its former name Tselinograd since 1961 was changed. It was founded as a settlement in 1830 by the name Akmoly or Akmolinsky prikaz, which, in 1832, was granted a town status and renamed Akmolinsk, the name remained until 1961 when it was changed to Tselinograd.
