Old Noll

Old Noll is an epithet for Oliver Cromwell (1599 – 1658), which was applied by his Royalist contemporaries to him. Noll is a British English term that means "the head, especially the top of the head". Cromwell was so call during the period of the English Interregnum, the period between the execution of Charles I and the Restoration of the monarchy, which reflected Cromwell's prominent role as a leader and his influence on the political landscape of the time.
