Pierre de Fermat

Pierre de Fermat (1601-1665) was a French mathematician, born near Montauban. He made important discoveries in the properties of numbers, and with his friend Blaise Pascal (1623 – 1662) invented a calculus of probabilities. He was held in high esteem by Henry Hallam (1777-1859), who ranks him next to René Descartes (1596 – 1650).
