Ram Janmabhumi - Babri Masjid

Ram Janmabhumi - Babri Masjid existed at Ayodhya at the place which was believed as the birthplace of Lord Ram, a Hindu deity, since 1528 having a controversial history, until it was settled by a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court of India's unanimous verdict pronounced on 9 November 2019. The Court ordered the government of India to create a trust to build the Ram Temple, and to give an alternative 5 acres of land in another place to the Uttar Pradesh Sunni Central Waqf Board for the purpose of building a mosque as a replacement for the demolished Babri Masjid. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the newly built temple on January 22, 2024 at Ram's supposed birthplace.

The history of Ram Janmabhoomi (the birth place of Ram) - Babri Masjid (Mosque) controversy dates back to the middle of the 16th century. It is believed that the Babri Mosque was originally built in 1528 by Babar, the first Mughal emperor of India, on the very spot where there was a Ram Temple. The structure and the place has been in the centre of discord between Hindus and Muslims and hundreds of lives have been lost in classes over the issue. Both the communities are claimant of this place. It was in 1883 that the Deputy Commissioner of Faizabad refused permission for construction of a temple at the disputed site following objections from the Muslim community. In 1885, 75 people were killed in communal clashes in Faizabad following dispute over this site. A legal dispute started over the site this year when Raghubir Das, the Mahant of Ram Janmsthan, filed a suit in the court of a sub-judge of Faizabad, seeking permission for construction of a temple at the site. However, the petition was turned down. Appeals before the District Judge and Judicial Commissioner of Oudh were also rejected.

On March 23, 1946, the Civil Judge of Faizabad ruled that a mosque had been built by Babar, and there was evidence to prove that it had been used for prayers by both Shias and Sunnis (the Muslim sects). On the night of December 22, 1949, the idols of Lord Rama, Lakshman and Sita were found installed within the structure. The very next day the place was closed by the order of the District Magistrate of Faizabad. Communal violence followed. Finally an order was passed by district administration and neither Hindus nor Muslims were allowed inside the structure. Protracted litigation to secure rights for entry into the disputed structure began thereafter. In 1984, the Ram Janmabhumi Mukti Yagya Samiti was formed to fight for the construction of a temple at the disputed site. In February 1986, the District Judge of Faizabad directed the State Government alongwith the District Magistrate, City Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police to open the gates to the disputed site and not to restrict access to it. On August 14, the full Bench of Allahabad High Court in Lucknow issued orders for maintaining status quo till the case was pending before it. Babri Mosque was demolished on December 6, 1992 by activist of the Ramjanmabhumi Movement. After the demolition of the very structure in a makeshift temple was created nearby where Hindus worshiped Lord Ram.
