Saigon

Saigon is the old name of Ho Chi Minh City, which is the largest city in Vietnam. It is situated on the river Saigon, one of the delta streams of the Mekhong, 60 miles from the China Sea. It is handsomely laid out with boulevards, &c. It has a fine palace, arsenal, botanical and zoological gardens, &c. Cholon, 4 miles South-West, forms a busy trading suburb, exporting rice, cotton, salt, hides, &c.

It was formerly the capital of French Cochin-China.
