Sankaram

Sankaram is a place in Andhra Pradesh, a state of India. There are numerous monolithic votive stupas, rock cut caves and other structures here. They were built around the 7th Century. The special feature of the main stupa here is that it was first carved out of a rock and then encased in bricks. There is also a brick built monastery. This consists of a rectangular court surrounded by small cells. In the middle, there is an apsidal-ended shrine. The hillside rock cut sanctuaries also contain relics of Lord Buddha. Surprisingly, there is another cave which is not a Buddhist, but a Hindu monument. There are images of Ganesha and Bhairava carved on the sides.
