Sir Richard Francis Burton

Sir Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890) was a traveller, born in Hertfordshire. He served first as a soldier in Scind under Sir C. Napier. He visited Mecca and Medina as an Afghan pilgrim and wrote an account of his visit in his "Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage, &c.". He penetrated Central Africa along with Captain Speke, and discovered Lake Tanganyika. He also visited Utah, and wrote "The City of the Saints". He travelled in Brazil, Palestine, and Western Africa, accompanied through many a hardship by his devoted wife. He translated the "Arabian Nights". His works on his travels numerous, and show him to have been of daring adventure.
