STATES OF THE CHURCH, the Papal States, extending irregularly from the Po to Naples, of which the Pope was the temporal sovereign, became part of Italy, in 1929 only the Vatican City State was granted sovereignty. Thus Papal States are reduced to a single city state of Vatican.
