Swiss Confederation

Swiss Confederation is the official name of Switzerland. The name has its origin in the Swiss Confederacy, which as a loose confederation of independent small states (cantons) initially within the Holy Roman Empire. However, by the end of 13th and in the 14th century it was strengthened, and Swiss Confederation was formed as a league of the several Swiss cantons to resist an attempt on the part of the Emperor Albrecht to incorporate certain of the free towns into his family possessions.
