Tanganyika

Tanganyika is a lake of East Central Africa, the second largest freshwater lake in the world by volume, and the second deepest. The lake is divided among four countries – Tanzania, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, and Zambia.

It was discovered by Speke and Burton in 1858, and more carefully explored by Livingstone and Stanley in 1871. The overflow is carried off by the Lukuga into the Upper Congo. It is girt round by lofty mountains. Its length is 420 miles and breadth from 15 to 80 miles.
