Tanjore

Tanjore, now Thanjavur, is a city in Tamil Nadu. It is situated in a fertile plain 180 miles southwest of Chennai, and about 45 miles from the sea. It is surrounded by walls. It contains a rajah's (king's) palace, a British residency, and manufactures silk, muslin, and cotton. During British Raj, it housed the headquarters of a district of the same name in Madras Province.
