Viper Island

Viper Island is one of the islands in Andaman and Nocobar Islands, a Union Territory of India. It is located in the South Andaman district.

Before India became an independent country in 1947, the British rulers of this country used to harbour political convits here. This is the place of 'Kala Pani' for convicts who were sent here to undergo imprisonments.

Britishers constructed first jail here, the land infested with snakes and all kinds of creatures potentially dangerous for human lives. However, it was abandoned after they constructed Cellular Jail.

There is a gallows atop a hillock where the condemned prisoners were used to be hanged.

This place has now become a place of attraction for the persons interested in the lives of revolutionary freedom fighters of India who were condemned and imprisoned here by British rulers.

Sher Ali, a revolutionary freedom fighter of India, who killed Lord Mayo, the Viceroy of India in 1872, was also hanged atop the hillock.

The whole island has become a memorial now.
