West Godavari

West Godavari is a district of the State of Andhra Pradesh in India. It is situated to the west of Godavari river. The District lies in tropical region between 16°15' to 17°30' Northern latitude and 80° 55' to 81° 55’ Eastern Longitude. It is bounded in the east by River Godavari, in the west by Krishna river, in the north by Khammam District and in the south by Bay of Bengal. The Godavari River separates East Godavari district on east and Krishna River separates it from Krishna district on the west.

West Godavari District is carved out of old Godavari District as it is the Western delta of the River Godavari, it was appropriately named as "West Godavari", with Headquarters at Eluru and came into existence in the year 1925.

The District occupies an area of 7,742 square km with a density of population 508 per sq km. As per 2011 census, the total population of the District is 39,36,966.

The District comprises four Revenue divisions - Eluru, Kovvur, Narasapuram and Jangareddigudem. It has 46 Mandals, 7 Municipalities, one Corporation 888 Gram Panchayats including Venkataraipuram township of Tanuku mandal in the district, of which 207 are notified Gram Panchayats and remaining 681 are non notified Gram Panchayats.
