Wieliczka

Wieliczka is a town near Krakow (Cracow) in Poland, formerly in Austrian Galicia. It is famous for its salt mines, which have been wrought continuously since 1250, the galleries of which extend to more than 50 miles in length. It entered in 1978 on the First UNESCO World Heritage List. In 1996 a decision was made to end industrial salt production in Wieliczka. In 1994, it was declared a national Historic Monument by the President of the Republic of Poland.
