With this massive victory, the Vyapam scam-hit BJP now controls all the 16 municipal corporations in the state. The voting to the 10 urban bodies was held on August 12 and the results were declared on August 16 by the state election commission. The Congress has won the lone chairperson's post in Sarangpur municipality of Rajgarh district and the remaining one has been bagged by an independent candidate in Ghuwara nagar parishad.
The BJP has won the Mayoral posts in Ujjain and Morena. Chairpersons' posts in Vidisha and Harda municipalities and Kotar, Chaakghat, Bhainsdehi and Suvasara nagar parishads, the state election commission official announced.
Not only Mayor's and chairmen's posts, BJP also won majority wards in most of urban bodies where elections were held. According to results declared, with Mayors' posts in Ujjain and Morena, BJP now controls all the corporation towns of the state.
'MP civic poll results are gladdening. I thank people of MP for reposing their trust in BJP. I salute efforts of Karyakartas and party leaders,' said Prime Minister on his Twitter page while leaving for UAE.
Whereas the PM's tweet gave a boost to the morale of the ruling party, the Congress got hurt. However it also set the tongue wagging in a section of the ruling party leaders if the PM should have tweeted on insignificant civic polls and also that PM 'avoided congratulating chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan' who is facing attacks on the Vyapam scam.
AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh was quick to respond to the PM's tweet at the Bhopal airport.
Digvijaya Singh said Prime Minister should 'break his silence' over Vyapam scam and other controversial issues involving BJP ministers and write about these matters on the micro blogging site-Twitter.
'He (Modi) was prompt and quick on tweeting over the MP civic polls. He should break his silence and tweet over Vyapam scam, Sushma Swaraj and Pankaja Munde involved in wrongdoings,' Singh told reporters here.
Taking a dig at Modi, Singh said that he was happy that the PM was now visiting mosques during his foreign trips.
'I am delighted that a person who did not wish to wear a skull cap, is visiting a mosque in UAE. It is a good sign,' Singh said.
The BJP in Delhi asked the Congress leadership to do 'self introspection,' while terming the civic polls victory as win for politics of development.
'The success of BJP is an indication of the development politics... We would like to say Congress Party President Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi need to be more practical. They need to do self introspection,' BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said in Delhi.
Congress vice-president Laxman Singh, however, admitted that the defeat was a consequence of party infighting.
In fact, the party has won the lone chairperson's post from Sarangpur municipality which falls in Singh's former Lok Sabha constituency of Rajgarh. He gave credit to the party members for maintaining constant touch with the people in Sarangpur which was not the case earlier.
On the very day results of the urban body elections were announced ,Uma Bharati, Union Minister and former chief minister made some significant remarks of far reaching consequences. She announced that she was ready to record her statement about the Vyapam scandal. Claiming that she was not in any way involved in the scam stated that 'People had faith in investigation under STF but some circumstances led to CBI probe. I am very surprised why my name was dragged in the scam,' she stated. Bharati said she is not interested in becoming the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh. Instead she would prefer to extend support to Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan for regaining power.
She revealed that she had proposed Gaurishankar Shejwar's name for the CM's post in 2004 when she stepped down. She did not want to become chief minister again. Talking about Prime Minister Modi, Bharati said she is immensely influenced by him and wants to write a book on him. Hitting out at the opposition Congress, Bharati said the party did not come out from British mentality. An Englishman A O Hume established the party and now it still has the similar mentality. 'The party does not accept even Maneka Gandhi and Barun Gandhi, as its leaders' she said, She further said the Congress leaders should not project Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to its forefront.
Bharati said Sonia Gandhi was infuriated when her sister's name cropped up but baseless allegations were levelled against Sushma Swaraj's daughter. 'Resignation is not tendered just on allegation,' she said.
Bharati said she initiated inquiry against Congress leaders on the charges levelled in the year 2003 and next responsibility was borne by Babulal Gaur and Shivraj Singh Chauhan, She also said entire party levelled charges against former chief minister Digvijaya Singh but the defamation case was filed against only her.
Uma said PM Narendra Modi had removed all obstacles in the Ganga cleaning programme. The quality of water in the river will be like 'mineral water' in ten years. She said the centre had allotted Rs. 20,000 crores, besides gathering resources under PPP mode.
It is after a long time that Uma Bharati held press meet in Bhopal. In fact after election to the Lok Sabha from Uttar Pradesh she was maintaining distance from Madhya Pradesh politics. Was she now trying to involve in the state politics, was the question being asked in the state's political circles after her press meet.
Meanwhile Digvijay Singh has urged CBI chief to act against chief minister Chauhan over 'tampered evidence'.
In a letter submitted to the CBI director on August 13, senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has reiterated that an offence under section 201 and 120 (b) of the IPC should be registered against MP chief minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan and officials who may be responsible for destroying or tampering with evidence in the Vyapam scam.
Singh, who had been pursuing the Special Task Force (STF) and Special Investigation Team (SIT) for the purpose said, 'The STF and SIT responsible for proper investigation turned a blind eye to the material provided by the whistleblower and the Truth Lab report to substantiate the charge.'
Backed by Digvijaya Singh, whistleblower Prashant Pandey had submitted in the Delhi high court an excel sheet file in a pen drive which he claimed to be 'original'. The file reportedly had the CM's name appearing 48 times as the person who recommended candidates for selection, with the Truth Lab verifying his claim that the 'original' excel sheet was tampered with, and the CM's name either deleted or replaced by 'Uma Bharti ji' or 'Raj Bhavan', 'M/s' or 'Minister'.
