At home he has to adopt the strategy of tiring out the opposition, buoyed and excited after the Bihar assembly poll outcome. It would certainly build high roads blocks to his juggernaut of the economic reforms. Indian politicians are habituated to short term and immediate political gains. They no more think in long term objective of their politics and consequent national interest. The country will witness the shadow boxing in the winter session of parliament with usual stalling of proceedings.
But the Prime Minister is faced with serious issue of countering the disastrous impact of growing climate of intolerance. He cannot depend on his friends using the social media to spread venom all over the country not he can expect assistance from those admirers he won by his striving for the past fifteen months. Many of them believe him to be behind the puppets and pantomimes. The fanatics exploiting the modern means of communication to spread their message of intolerance cause the suspicions. Their belief stems from his successful exploitation of social media, for the first time for mobilizing votes in the last Lok Sabha election.
Obviously these observers are not willing to grant that radicals in their religious beliefs and their hard line approach can successfully learn to use modern means of communications and need not depend on traditional weapons of arrows and arches or swords and lances. Fanatics are more adept in learning use of modern means. The terrorists and groups, emerging from the Middle East, have exploited the modern telecom means. In fact concerned insist on an intense campaign against without comprehension of the psyche of fanaticism. Even mention of their activities in dispatches sends them walking on the cloud nine. Their mention in dispatches is counted as their success in terrorising the rest.
The film star and his family expressed, through media, their fears on receiving threat on social media, particularly to their children. Aamir Khan even spoke of the insistence of his wife and film maker Kiron Rao to leave India to settle down in a safer place. It was a human response to the climate of fear woven around. The religious fervor does not enter in human mind when a threat to life becomes an overpowering emotion. It has happened time and again and in every religion and in every race. Aamir Khan spoke of the fears and desire of his wife but has not fled India nor does he show such panic.
However the middle class reaction was to condemn him for giving vent to his fears as if it happened only due to his religious beliefs and not in other denominations. A message circulated from Mumbai spoke of widow of the martyr Mahadik who fell to his injuries in encounter with terrorists in Kashmir who expressed her determination to enroll her children in armed force only. The purport of message was a poor widow is not afraid of security of her children but a film star who netted several crore of rupees from his film career in India wants to run away. The underlay intent is to show that being a Muslim does not make him to consider himself to be sufficiently Indian to fight back. When you break down the message what emerges is mind shattering communal perception couched in it. He will run away because he is a Muslim by birth is the inherent belief in it.
Obviously the middle class have forgotten that tens of millions of Muslims had opted to stay in India instead of going to an Islamic country at the time of violent partition of Indian subcontinent. They made India second largest Muslim population country and did not attempt to run away even in face of violence and threat to life in communal violence erupting periodically in one or other parts of India for the past seven decades.
Any expression to the climate of growing intolerance immediately invites a sharp reaction to condemn the person as anti national. Many had no effective means of expressing their concerns. They decided to return their honours. It became a subject matter for derisive comments. The film star and now active BJP member Anupam Kher organised a protest march. Condemn anti national literates for actions as traitors was the slogans in the march. Their slogans were a denial of fundamental right of freedom of expression to all others who do not conform to their belief. The intellectual Kher did not prevent anyone from shouting such derogatory slogans leave aside his rebuking them.
The Prime Minister refused to subscribe to the view of growing intolerance. His finance minister pointed out peaceful coexistence of million diverse sects and panths in India for centuries to prove Indian culture cannot have intolerance. The minister of state for home claimed expressions like Aamir Khan’s affect the good image of India. It is for his department to find out the real intent behind the campaign. The fanatics are not so naïve not to see the disastrous impact it will have on potential investors. In every country visited, NaMo has tried to induce the potential investors to come to India with their production mechanisms and technology to accelerate the pace of economic development and expand job opportunities for young Indians. All of them also belong to a different religion. They would naturally hesitate to come to a land where religious intolerance in gaining grounds. Who benefit from accelerated growth more in India? Why religious intolerance is expressed now if different denominations have coexisted for centuries? NaMO needs to find the real cause for expression in growing numbers the religious intolerance.
