Narendra Modi had forced his ways to change the BJP agenda to relegate the outdated priorities and bring to the centre the economic development issues that new generation yearned for. He did not indulge in petty political rhetoric during the campaign. Instead he presented the outline of the dream that younger generation should expect him to deliver. His promise was to achieve in sixty months what his predecessors had not achieved in sixty years. They accepted his word that he can and he will deliver them from drudgery.
The middle class was happy with his stern warning not to expect any charity. Instead his promise was to empower them to realize their potential to earn their bread with dignity and live in comfort. In that, the middle class saw an end to diversion of funds for building the vote banks through feeding the deprived. Even less fortunate were enthralled at prospects of gaining strength to stand on their feet rather than life in abyss of poverty and hope for few more crumbs of charity.
Their expectations doubled with his move to open several sectors including some of defence area for direct foreign investments. He visited every developed country to assure their capitalists that his government was ready to facilitate their easy entry into Make in India. He saw need of generating jobs at a rapid pace in the country but also impart skills to enable young Indians to get jobs outside. They were happy that he had driven conventional politicians of his party to corner and immobilized opponents by ignoring their protests.
But there was very little to show at the end of 45 months. The economy has slowed down. The growth rate was decelerated by one per cent in the post demonetization period. Young could not understand the rationale of his drastic economic move. They could not believe that he had seriously believed that his step would bring out hoarded black wealth from business class homes. He had been the chief minister of the state where more money is generated than all other parts of India and even tax evaded capital is used to generate profits through investments in wealth generating mechanisms. Was he fighting the internal battles to put the traditional vote banks of his party was the question on their mind but they had no answer. They suspected as much from consternation and silence in the Sangh Parivar and evasive tactics of others in the party. Finally Reserve Bank confirmed the general belief of failure of his move though everyone remained silent on the issue of huge proportion of fake currency notes in circulation. Ending the menace of fake currency was one of the objectives of his move. Everyone in the official circle is embarrassed to admit that fake currency got legitimized as it was accepted in rush hours during the limited period of exchange of currency.
He began changing tracks of his politics and consequently economic approach twenty months prior to demonetization. He had won unprecedented vote support with his slogan - sabka sath sabka vikas. Yet he mumbled his protest over the violence against the Dalit and other lower castes in the name of cow protection and for preservation of original faith of India. He suddenly gave up his initiatives to normalize relations with Pakistan and joined the conservative forces in Pakistan bashing. Instead of follow up action to his instinctive initiative to join the birth day celebration for the Pakistan Prime Minister by his family, he undertook the surgical strike to eliminate few terrorists camping in the Pak occupied Kashmir. The BJP was regaled by one step.
In the last twelve months he spoke nothing else but hurling abuses at the Congress party, and particularly against the Gandhi family. His attention was more at corruption in India and his efforts to fight it to eliminate it. But his entire campaign has inherent contradiction. He was virtually hitting hard at the middle class, the consistent support base of his party since inception of the party in April 1980. Any talk suggesting rampant corruption involves only the middle class since poor have no need for it. They do not have power or wealth to indulge in corruption. But his campaign was building sharp differences between two classes.
His government cancelled 2.20 lakh licenses on a plea that they were obtained through corrupt means. The government did not even bother to study the resultant impact on employment nor did it hold corrupt officials who were part of the illegal actions. 479 firms were proceeded against for not depositing the tax deducted from salaries of their staff. Every official move in the name of ending corruption including his drastic economic step of removing the high value currency from legal tender ended only in more harassment of and hardship to only middle class. It is hard to believe that he was not aware of the consequences. Only section to bear the brunt of his policy measures was the middle class. It would automatically suggest that he was engaged deliberately at hurting them in the name of fighting corruption.
He did not enjoy a clear majority within the BJP in parliament. His hands were tied to his back and he was forced to switch his tracks. Yet he was allowed to stay in office only because of the fear of everlasting political consequence any attempt to disturb him mid way of his term. It would have resulted in driving the death nail in the BJP prospects for future. The Sangh does not have a capable hand to challenge NaMo. The unbelievable performance of the party in the Uttar Pradesh assembly elections in March 2017 proved the point and also enhanced fears. Young are unable to read his politics for the last two years for it has not delivered what they were told to expect.
INDIA
MODI FAILS TO DELIVER WHAT HE PROMISED TO IN 60 MONTHS
THE YOUNG AND THE MIDDLE CLASS ARE IN DESPAIR
Vijay Sanghvi - 2018-03-08 11:14
The young of India do not articulate their disappointments but they also do not hide their despair at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi showing signs of his surrender to the conventional politics.
His drive for unconventional politics during the election campaign in May 2014 had motivated them to vote for his side. The young had expected that he would deliver them from the tradition bound concepts of politics and economic development. For seventy years, the country was driven at very slow pace of economic development as the ruling regimes had refused to realize the need for modern approach of empowering every citizen to reach the maximum of his or her ability. Instead they were pegged to outdated concepts of life changes.
