Attuned to the desolate feel of distressed and traumatised millions at the mercy of natural catastrophes and their stupefying suddenness, the IMCWP stated in the appeal to working people, “Millions of people cannot have portable water and are deprived of basic hygienic facilities, natural disasters like earthquakes, floods and hurricanes turn into scourges with serious social and environmental consequences.”
The statement, reiterating the ‘deepening of labour-capital contradiction in sync with increased oppression of masses and exploitation of human and natural resource expressed worries over ‘appropriation of scientific and technological advances in the ‘destructive direction’ instead of serving the interests of humanity.
Participants in the deliberations were 137 delegates from 74 parties of 58 countries. The meeting was to celebrate the centenary of the Communist International, founded in 1919 under the principal initiative of the Russian Socialist Democratic Labour Party (Bolshevik), led by Vladimir Ilych Lenin. The conference gave a call for celebrating the 150th birth centenary of Lenin who was born on April 22, 1870.
The most significant absence at the 21st IMCWP was of the Communist Party of China. Little wonder as words like ‘Long live proletarian internationalism’, ‘US imperialism’ and ‘class struggle’ ceased to find mention in the documents of CPC for the last four decades. But the main reason for absence of CPC delegates is not these issues. The CPC top brass are dogged by several major crises ranging from Hong Kong to the trade war with Washington, that forced them to convene a four day plenum which began on 28 October.. Keeping the next national party congress, scheduled to be held two years hereinafter, the plenary session is important as it will set out the mapping of the future for CPC supremo Xi Jinping. a sensitive issue in view of the Hong Kong imbroglio.
Present at the Congress were Pallab Sengupta, central secretariat member, CP of India and M A Baby, politburo member. CPI(M). Sengupta in his speech apprised the participants of the gravity of purposeful decimation of democratic polity in India and the attendant economic, social and cultural crisis under the ruling party, which “functions ‘under the diktat of world finance capital. Indian ruling classes, with the corporate bourgeoisie at its helm, is going by the dictates of the world finance capital and are resorting to fascist hooliganism and polarising people on religious line, curbing all democratic and human rights, attacks on all sections of the curbing all democratic and human rights, attacks on all sections of the society, bypassing even Parliament The onslaught of Hindutva fascism has become so intense that the question of forging popular united front with all left, democratic, secular and patriotic sections in the country, have resurfaced”.
The CPI(M) briefed the meeting how it “ is trying its best to move in this direction of intense class struggles by mobilising workers, peasants, youth, students, marginalized sections and women” and its endeavour as the “main force along with CPI and other Left and democratic sections”. The party has initiated a “number of democratic and progressive alternate programmes” in labour and mass fronts without any mention about the threat from what it calls the ‘fascistic’ party.
Very significantly, the CP of Pakistan blamed both the ruling parties in Pakistan and India in Kashmir where peoples wage a grim battle for restoration of democracy and self-determination.
The IMCWP expressed deep concern about “the hostility of US imperialists and its allies in the Persian Gulf that are creating dangerous situation among the peoples of the region” and stressed the imperative for ‘strengthening international solidarity between the communist parties and class-oriented labour organisations, social, popular and progressive movements and movements of poor peasants and agricultural workers”.
The 22nd IMCWP is scheduled to take place in Pyongyang in 2121. (IPA Service)

“Nature is plundered for the greed of profit of the monopolies, including the recent destruction of Amazonia in the interests of capitalism”, noted the 2200-plus word appeal of the 21st international meeting of Communist and Workers’ Parties in Izmir, the third-largest city of Turkey on the Aegean coast, known as Smyrna in antiquity, between 18 and 20 October. Coincidentally, city founded by the Greeks, subsequently taken over by the Romans and rebuilt by Alexander the Great , later a part of the Ottoman Empire in the 15th century, was shaken by an earthquake of a magnitude of 5.8 on the Richter Scale, a short while before the jamboree of official Marxists of the globe. It was rediscovered that the city lies on 17 active fault lines with the potential to cause earthquakes with magnitudes ranging between 6 and 7.2.
