The state government has asked authorities of all departments to strictly ensure the implementation of Urdu as second official language throughout the state.

The government has directed all departments to use Urdu for all official works too. For this purpose, says the official letter, the services of the Urdu translators should be fully utilized.

It may be recalled that erstwhile Congress government led by Narayan Dutt Tiwari accorded official status to Urdu in 1989. The decision was widely protested by BJP and others leading to riots at several part of the state.

The government had issued order to use Urdu in registry of land, revenue records and signboards in government offices.

In 1995 Mulayam Singh Yadav government appointed nearly 4000 Urdu translators and Urdu teachers.

The subsequent governments in the state, however, completely ignored the progress of Urdu.

Though it is a political move, Mayawati's present move would help in growth of Urdu language in the state.#
