Responding to his irresponsible utterances, Chief Minister Kamal Nath asked whether Vijayvargiya was a BJP leader or a Mafia don. Other Congress leaders also warned Vijayvargiya. PWD Minister Sajjan Singh Verma asked the residents of Indore to boycott Vijayvargiya. Digvijaya Singh said that it was the RSS that had imparted this training to Vijayvargiya. Home Minister Bala Bachchan and Higher Education Minister Jitu Patwari asked Vijayvargiya to apologise for talking of violence. It may be mentioned here that Vijayvrgiya is BJP in-charge of West Bengal. He often condemns West Bengal Chief Minister and the members of her party for their violent activities. The state Police has already booked 350 BJP leaders for provoking the BJP workers. The state BJP President backed Vijayvargiya’s stand and said anti-Mafia campaign was aimed at BJP supporters.

However, the MP administration continued its campaign against Mafia. In a major crackdown on sand mafia involved in illegal mining, the administration set afire a ‘submarine’ worth about Rs. 25 lakh. ‘Submarine’ is the local name for a boat equipped with powerful suction pumps and pipes. Almost 1000 truckloads of sand were being mined in the area daily.

A joint team of revenue and police force tracked the sand mafia at Padam Ghata village of Ashoknagar district where sand was being mined illegally from the Sindh River. At least a dozen people were involved in illegal mining at the spot. “They escaped as soon as they saw the police arriving,” a cop said.

Unlike the past practice, the team set afire and destroyed the ‘submarine’, instead of confiscating it. The raiding team brought the machine on the river bank and set it fire.

Sub-divisional magistrate Ashok Nagar, Suresh Jadhav said, “Investigations are on to trace the owner of the machine and the people involved in illegal sand mining. The operation was carried out under the ‘anti mafia campaign’ launched by the state government.”

Various activities to seek support for and oppose CAA and NRC are continuing in the state. The state BJP’s awareness drive in support of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) continued in all the district headquarters on Sunday. The party, in association with public forums, organised a rally in the state capital and launched a signature campaign to garner public support in favour of the law.

The BJP charged the Congress and other opposition parties with spreading confusion among the public by opposing the Act.

“Minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh are victims of religious persecution. Their sisters and daughters are being raped and their men are being killed. The citizenship law is to give protection to all such minorities. Mahatma Gandhi and many Congress leaders had advocated support to those who are tortured on religious basis,” said BJP state president Rakesh Singh while launching a door-door-door campaign.

Singh said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP President Amit Shah have assured protection to the affected people under the CAA. “It was the Congress, along with opposition parties, who are pursuing appeasement politics by opposing the law and creating a rift among Muslims and Hindus,” he said.

The BJP and Jagruk Nagrikta Manch held a rally in Bhopal in favour of the citizenship law. The rally was addressed by Rajya Sabha member Rakesh Sinha and senior ophthalmologist Dr PS Bindra. Under the mass contact drive, BJP state vice-president and MLA Rameshwar Sharma, Vijesh Lunawat, deputy media in-charge Sanjay Govind Khoche, former MLA Dhruvnarayan Singh, state spokesperson Rahul Kothari and district head Vikas Vikrani approached the public and presented them literature on CAA as part of the awareness drive.

Union minister Narendra Singh Tomar joined the campaign In Morena while Leader of Opposition (LoP) Gopal Bhargava launched the drive in his home constituency Garhakota in Sagar district.

The BJP campaign will run for the next ten days in which party leaders will address seminars and organise rallies to garner support for CAA. Former chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan was in Assam for the drive while former Union minister Uma Bharati will participate in a seminar of ‘intellectuals’ at Chhatarpur and Panna on January 8 and 9 respectively.
