State food and supply minister Adesh Partak Singh Kairon has requested the Centre to either move wheat stocks out of Punjab or allow exports so that they can provide storage space for paddy. However, his request was rejected. It is despite the fact that lakhs of tonnes of wheat and paddy are are kept in open space and they are likely to be rendered unfit for human consumption, sources said.
Samjhauta Express, a symbol of peace and friendship between India and Pakistan, is also likely to be affected following strains in relationship between the two countries. Though, an official of the northern railways refused to say anything about continuance of the train, he said that running of this train comes under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of External Sffairs. Sources in the MEA, Govt of India, said that the train could be suspended for some months.
Meanwhile the Pakistani passengers arriving here by the Samjhauta Express and the Lahore-Amritsar bus are being thoroughly checked after the Mumbai attacks. The bi-weekly train and bus together transport over 250 Pakistanis every week. A top security officer said that double checks were being carried out on all incoming Pakistani passengers.#
