The fact remains that it was during the Congress government headed by GB Pant when statues of Ramlalla were kept inside the later demolished Babri mosque. Again, it was during the Congress regime of Veer Bahadur Singh when the locks of Ram Janambhumi-Babri Masjid were opened. It was once again during the Congress regime of ND Tewari as CM when shilanyas for the construction of Ram temple took place.
It would be worth mentioning here that the then CM ND Tewari was very much against the shilanyas, but he was prevailed upon by Union Home Minister Buta Singh. Finally, the demolition of Babri mosque took place on December 6, 1992 when PV Narasimha Rao was the Prime Minister of the Congress government. The makeshift temple was constructed under central rule.
Samajwadi Party founder and UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav had ordered firing on karsewaks on October 30,1992 at Ayodhya to protect the Babri mosque. Over a dozen persons were killed in police firing and Mulayam Singh Yadav became a hero for the seculars and the minority communities for his attempt to protect the mosque, so much so that he was given the sobriquet “Maulana Mulayam Singh” for his efforts.
Mulayam Singh Yadav always maintained that he took the extreme step to protect the mosque. This act of Mulayam Singh Yadav helped him to become overnight a national leader and he was recognised outside of India too, especially in the greater Muslim world. Samajwadi Party always maintained it would court judgement or out-of-court settlement through negotiations. Bahujan Samaj Party leaders Kanshiram and Mayawati also decided to honour the court judgement or negotiated settlement.
BSP national president Mayawati has always taken credit for effective maintenance of law and order when the judgement was announced by the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court on the Ram Janmabhumi case. At that time, Mayawati was the chief minister of UP.
Coming back to the present moment, there has been no comment yet on the scheduled religious ceremony at Ayodhya for the construction of Ram Temple from top opposition leaders, whether it’s Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, or Akhilesh Yadav or even Mayawati on scheduled puja. (IPA Service)

LUCKNOW: The silence of three major political parties — Samajwadi Party, BSP and the Congress —on scheduled puja on August 5 at Ayodhya for the Ram Mandir has baffled political commentators as well as media-persons. When contacted, none of the leaders from these major political parties showed any willingness to talk on this sensitive issue. They indicated that they had received no directive from the top leadership to speak on this issue as yet.
