Donald Trump was caught in a peculiar dilemma due to fast spread of infectious pandemics. He did not have to fight the corona pandemic only but also fight for his second term in office through the election due in November. He has to fight many odds, most created by his hasty and intemperate responses. He is found by masses to be a person who does not hesitate to resort to untruthful stances and utterances. He is obviously banking his prospects on garnering large proportion of vote of Americans of Indian origins. That made him to respond to overtures of the Indian Prime Minister. Even in the midst of the pandemic crisis he came to receive the ovation by a huge crowd of Gujarati people in Ahmadabad. The venue of his arrival in India and organization of a huge rally were carefully chosen as Gujarati is the largest contingent in American voters of Indian origins.

It does not explain though why Narendra Modi imposed the lockdown on all economic, social, religious, personal and family activities, a severe step not in consonance with human nature. The middle classes immediately and promptly responded and locked themselves in their homes... They could easily afford or rather willingly accept a break in their economic activities. The classes that constitute 60 per cent of Indian population and depend on daily earnings did not know wither to turn to for survival. No one could indicate the duration of the lockdown. They had no reserves to sustain longer duration without their fresh earnings and the uncertainty over duration of the lockdown.

The Prime Minister had not shown his awareness of impact of his decision to impose clamps on all human activities in order to reduce to minimum human contacts, without prior consultations with colleagues in the Cabinet, in party or with various wings of the government. The wisdom down twenty four hours later as the finance minister’s plan to provide free food supply in gratis to vulnerable sections. In that also she did not overlook to grab credit for taking credit to tell that he scheme would cost the national treasury Rs. 1.80 lakh crore. The details of benefit outflow followed though it did not assure any section to believe that the intended quantum of food would actually reach their hands.

The Public Distribution System had collapsed a decade earlier. The PDS shops ceased to exist due to overgrown corruption. The states were reluctant to lift he allocated quantum as they had to bear the huge costs of carriage from FCI owned store houses to state owned store facilities. The retailers found the profit margins allowed were not adequate enough to pay to corrupt officials, carriage costs. In anyway, the lockdown would not permit PDS shops to operate. The government would not be able to deliver for lack of mechanism needed. In addition, distribution was made conditional to show of ration card or Aadhar card. Only four months later the announcement came ration card of any state would be valid in any other state. It took four months to bring the difficulty to reach the right authority to ease the situation even though the government machinery was in mould of the emergency operations.

In one stroke, the Indian society was divided with one section forced to remain with the family leaving aside their economic activities and other the larger section compelled to worry for the survival of the family as their earning activities were put on hold. The fan club congratulated the Prime Minister for his bold and timely decision. The fan club did not have to worry for the food needs of their family. They could afford to make their thoughts viral on social media from safety of their closed homes debarring entry not only to other humans and also to the undesirable chip of dangerous germs. The belief was shattered as number of infection affected humans climbed up steadily despite the lockdown. The increase proportion was not as much as in America or two South American countries.

Unlike America, the infection did not victimize poor section in India. Number of deaths to due to corona infection in America indicated more victims were non whites. The whites were rare cases. As against it, 80 million persons, mostly families of labour in the closed factories or road side traders, migrated, mostly on feet and in large groups without government prescribed precautions, and covering distances of few hundred miles in the initial period of the lockdown migrated but not even dozen cases of infection reported. Most of two and half million infection affected patients and deaths were of the middle class. The mystery is not explainable in any logical term.

Yet another staggering aspect was the Canadian authorities managed to control the infection even without resorting to the extreme measures that sought humans to live in defiance of normal human nature compared to the mighty neighbour. How was it possible? That brings to forefront the worrisome issue that ought to cause worry to the Fan Club What if Donald Trump fails to get the second term as most predictions forecast. India stands exposed due to misreading by the Prime Minister. Or can India hope to gain if Trump manages to get another term?
