The block presidents, district presidents and PCC chiefs of the party from all states would participate in the meeting that is expected to deliberate upon party set-up, election campaign and issues to be highlighted in the run up to the general elections, said Major (retired) Ved Prakash, national secretary of the party.

For the past five years the UPA government at the centre has done some landmark works from creating national assets through National Rural Guarantee Programme (NRGEA) to enactment of Right to Information Act, he said, adding the party would certainly be benefited from these pro-poor policies.

``Under NRGEA projects an estimated 250 million people have got employment for 100 days and every worker of the congress should be informed about this flagship scheme of the UPA government and its virtues'', Major said.

To educate the congress workers about the ongoing development works carried out by UPA government during its tenure that comes to an end in May this year, and to counter the opposition parties disinformation campaign the Congress high command has decided to hold this national meet of block level workers, said another senior party functionary.

The national general secretaries of the Congress have so far held two rounds of meeting at the party headquarters to formulate agenda for the meeting and to oversee other preparations. This would be the second such conference that is being held since Sonia Gandhi took over the reign of power from former party chief late Sita Ram Kesari.

The Congress president Sonia Gandhi would inaugurate the conference whereas Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh would deliver keynote address outlining the policies that his government formulated and implemented during last four and half years. Senior ministers of Singh's Cabinet like home minister P Chidambaram, foreign minister Pranab Mukherjee, human resources development minister Arjun Singh and some others are also expected to highlight the policies and programmes of the UPA government.

The meeting is also expected to address the problems party has been facing at the block, district and state levels. Those who would be participating in the meeting have been directed to come out with their suggestions as to how to improve people to people contact and resolve the issues relating to the common man. #
