The latest is Nicaraguans called for international solidarity after documents leaked from the US embassy in Managua revealed a plot to overthrow the democratically elected government. According to the papers, Washington has been planning an orchestrated transition of government in the Central American country over the next two years. It is the latest bid by the US to oust the Sandinista government headed by President Daniel Ortega which it claims is a threat to its regional interests.

The leaked documents have led to fears of US plans to destabilise the presidential and parliamentary elections, scheduled for November this year. This presidential election is significant as already in the recent presidential elections, the left candidate Castillo ad won wit a small margin and e is supposed to take over on July. But US sources are creating instability and backing the right candidate Fujimori who is the daughter of the former president jailed for corruption.

Nicaragua is still recovering from an attempted Washington-backed coup in April 2018, which saw armed right-wing gangs terrorise civilians and kill government supporters. Despite the violent attacks, the Western media — along with US-funded opposition media organisations and NGOs operating inside Nicaragua — portrayed the events as a peaceful, popular uprising against a brutal dictatorship.

An open letter has been penned by the Alliance for Global Justice calling for solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and demanding the US stops interfering in the elections. It reminded Washington of the 1986 ruling by the International Court of Justice in The Hague which ruled that the United States had violated international law by supporting the Contras — death squads seeking to overthrow the Sandinista government — and mining Nicaragua’s harbours.

Over 30,000 Nicaraguans died as a result of the war and their economy was totally destroyed by the time the war ended with the US ordered to pay more than $17 billion in reparations, which it has refused. Washington channelled millions into opposition candidates as it manipulated the 1990 elections, threatening more war if Nicaraguans failed to vote in accordance with US wishes.

“Right now, the Renacer Act is moving quickly through the US Congress with the explicit intent to interfere in Nicaragua elections, as stated in the title: Reinforcing Nicaragua’s Adherence to Conditions for Electoral Reform Act of 2021,” the Alliance for Global Justice said.“The Renacer Act ramps up economic sanctions. It threatens Nicaraguan voters to vote for an opposition candidate if they do not want to suffer serious privation over coming years.”

But the group warned that US regime change operations in Latin America have a “long, sordid history and continue to do enormous harm in the many places where they are active today.”It called for people to rally in solidarity with the Nicaraguan people and to sign an open letter demanding an end to US interference and respect for national sovereignty.

As of now, there is a big fight in Latin America between left and right and there is a close coordination between the leftist forces. After Peru, the LA left is looking at Chile where presidential elections will be held in October this year. All indications suggest that the left and centrists may come out successful in Chile. In fact, the Chilean Communist Party as announced its candidate and sought support of the centrists. Already, the right has been defeated in referendum on constitutional changes and the battle for presidency has hotted up. Nicaragua in November will be the last presidential election this year and the US agencies are working against left in both Chile and Nicaragua. (IPA Service)
