Kashmir is the problem state ever since Raja Hari Singh signed agreement of merger of Kashmir into the Indian union in 1948. He had ruled out merger with Pakistan though the departing British rulers had given option to all princely states to either merge with India or Pakistan and alternatively retain their independence. Sardar Patel then deputy Prime Minister made all but two to sign the merger agreement with India. Junagarh and Hyderabad with the Muslim ruling heads but overwhelming Hindu populous had toyed with merger with Pakistan. India found solution to make both to be in India but Raja Hari Singh continued to be on horns of a dilemma.

The Pakistan government incited the anti social Baluch thugs to teach a lesson to people of Kashmir new lessons in atrocities. Patel rushed units of Indian armed force on receipt of indications. The Indian soldiers not only protected but also ended the menace to help Raja to sign merger with India deed. Nehru accepted special efforts to retain Kashmiriyat.

Sheikh Abdulla a teacher in Kashmir was instrumental in entire episode. Nehru took the Kashmir aggression issue to the UN Security Council though not specified for obvious reasons, to prove to the world the Indian commitment to non violence and non aggression though even Abdulla was against in a belief we need to find our solutions without depending on major powers.

The unique feature was reflected in insistence of the Muslims to be known as Kashmiri Muslims and not as Muslim Kashmiri. All Muslims are directed to identify themselves by their religion first before their nationality as directed by the Prophet. All Muslims except from Kashmir do not dare to defy the dictum. This was the special feature of the Kashmir culture.

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee founded the Bharatiya Jan Sangh and made it the political hand of the Sangh to keep his word to the then Sangh chief MS Golwalkar to wrought his consent and lend his support by releasing few effective men for the Jan Sangh party. After Nehru got his promise enshrine in the constitution to provide special state status to Kashmir, Dr. Mukherjee got the issue to enhance his support base. His party idea to be alternate to the Congress collapsed in miserable results in the first election in 1952. DR. Mukherjee collapsed in isolation due to his sudden ill health but the Sangh got an issue to propagate to expand its vote base. The Sangh kept memories of its first had of its political hand by converting the demand into the basic.

It is argued often that no Indians except those born Kashmiri can own house, land or any property. The state law under provisions of the special status stood in way of the state becoming the integral part. No one protests against similar law prevailing in Himachal and seven Eastern states. The Vajpayee government could not even think of repealing the constitutional provision as he had to depend on others Though Modi got the clear majority in 2014 he had to think of his international image.

In first 100 days of his second term he allowed himself to be carried on shoulders of his home minister and enacted the legislation by going a step forward of not repealing the special status provisions by went ahead by snatching the voting rights of state to elect their direct local rulers. The conversion into Union Territory meant the direct command in hands of the union home minister.

The move was apparently inspired and initiated by the home minister indicating NaMo was taken for a ride through the garden path. Six months later, Shah’s lack of political ability was exposed in the defeat of the party in the Delhi election. NaMo rushed to the public rally to repudiate his home minister by denying any proposal for fresh register of Indian citizens to be under consideration by his government.

For two years the Indian Security forces could not deal with unrest and violence despite heavy handed dealing with the local young. The security forces behaved as they do war theatres but overlooked the basic assignment was to assure the locals to be on friendly terms and not treat them with a heavy hand a necessity in war times.

Everyone overlooks the basic attitude of Indians in all other states. The educated Kasmiri young applicants are ignored or bypassed even when they qualify in every respect. Their being born, brought up and educated in Kashmir valley makes them potential terrorist in eyes of those recruiting in other states or even for government organization. The migrants from Kashmir are not accepted even as tenants.

No seniors of the ruling party took steps against organized demonstrations in UP Rajasthan and other states asking students to go back after young school students hurled stones to protest against killing of young Vani as terrorist in encounter. The protest against young students from Kashmir was the expression of anger as if they were from foreign land.

NaMo could sense that conversion of the state into the Union Territory had sent the state people seething in anger at their treatment as unwanted aliens. The pro Sangh leaders and professionals and even intelligentsia have basically not treated the Kashmiri as Indians but driven them to be violent to seek their recognition. The Man Mohan Singh government had allowed free access to Kashmiri tradesmen to sell their wares to Kashmiri in areas under the illegal occupation of Pakistan. For the first time they had direct look at the conditions, of extreme poverty and pervading illiteracy in that region to demand closure of borders in three months.

Another misconceived notion making rounds is that thousands of Kashmir Pundits’ are driven out of Valley by hurling stones at them as the Muslims are not willing to tolerate the Hindu living among them. It has not been noticed that only those who were unwilling to or incapable of repayment of their past debts to Muslim wealthy had found easy solution in running away. The government in Delhi was obliged to keep them in relief camps. For 53 years they have free accommodation, food, health care and education and priority in employment to their next generation. Is that not allurement to others to reach the relief camps? Without thorough investigation the version extended by runaway has been accepted as it provided the weapon for the Muslim bashing.

When most people of India refuse to accept the people of KASHMIR as integral part why are we worried over their being an integral part of India nor not? They cannot take away the territory and two years have proved you do not want to accept them as Indians. The Muslim bashing started in media on getting indications from the meeting of politicians from Kashmir Valley that NaMo may revert back to win.
