ULCCS is among the leaders in research on disaster management in Kerala. The southern state of Kerala, recently plagued by torrential rains and severe floods is looking for mitigation methods on disasters. ULCCS, involved with rescue and relief operations and rehabilitation projects, has set a co-operative alternative to disaster management. The co-operative has also organised relief efforts during the pandemic.

ULCCS is the largest labour cooperative in Asia and the only Indian primary cooperative having membership in International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). ULCCS presented their development alternatives and unique democratic and transparent practices and governance, innovated and successfully implemented by common labourers in the session. The construction cooperative is now providing employment for nearly 16,000 people including 1000 engineers and more than 1000 technicians and management experts on a regular basis and for several thousands indirectly.

In the session, ULCCS presented their diversification philosophy as a best practice to be emulated. The co-operative has diversified into IT, IT Infrastructure, Tourism, Skill development, Arts and Crafts, Housing, Quality testing, Manufacturing of building materials and Agriculture to provide jobs for an emerging highly skilled youth population. It has ensured gender balance also through the job creation by diversification. It also presented its 97 year long history without any labour unrest as testimonial to the proactive labourer welfare measures undertaken. The co-operative is owned and managed by dedicated labourers, concluded the presentation. ULCCS was the only primary co-operative selected to give a presentation at the session.
