Lapung finally kept his tryst with the National Clean and Jerk record in the 96kg class, lifting 198kg on his way to gold. He missed his date with the record in the National Championships in Bhubaneswar earlier this year when the judges ruled his attempt as a No-Lift. But today, there was no stopping him from regaining the mark from Vikas Thakur (Services).
Though Services’ Jagdish settled for silver with a total of 331kg, 15kg less than Sambo Lapung, the Services juggernaut continued to cruise along on Monday too. Their rowers swept the three gold on offer in the men’s competition – the Lightweight Double Sculls, the Quadruple Sculls and Coxed Eight teams.
Armyman Gulveer Singh also beat more experienced competitors to win the men’s 10000m crown.
Himachal Pradesh’s Seema won the Women’s 10,000m gold when the jury disqualified Maharashtra’s Sanjivani Jadhav for a lane infringement. With less than a lap to go for the finish, the visibly tiring front-runner stumbled and stepped inside the border to be disqualified by the jury.
Hrutika Shriram (Maharashtra) claimed her ninth gold medal in National Games, her first in this edition, winning the 3m Springboard Diving contest at the Sardar Patel Aquatics Complex in Rajkot. Notching up a tally of 179.15 points.
Telangana claimed the Mixed Team gold with a 3-0 victory over Kerala. The husband-wife pair of Sumeet Reddy and Sikki Reddy put the team in the lead before Sai Praneeth rallied from a game deficit to beat the redoubtable HS Prannoy. Samia Farooqi made quick work of Gowrikrishna to seal the gold.
Meanwhile, in Women’s Hockey, Haryana captain Rani Ramphal scored a hattrick in a 4-0 defeat of Odisha for their second win in Group A at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Rajkot. They are assured of a place in the last four. Sunelita Toppo got the other goal.
Uttar Pradesh bounced back for a 6-0 win over hosts Gujarat who lost their second match on the trot, albeit by a respectable margin. The winners took the lead in the first minute through Yogita Bora and Hina Bano later added a brace, with all the goals coming from open play.
In a Group B game, Karnataka came from behind to tie with Jharkhand 3-3.
Late on Sunday night, Tamil Nadu’s 21-year-old Arockiya Alish upstaged the fancied Punam Yadav (Uttar Pradesh) and Harjinder Kaur (Punjab) to win the Women’s 76kg class weightlifting gold. Arockiya Alish lifted a total of 206kg. Punam Yadav and Harjinder Kaur, National Champions in 76kg class and 71kg class respectively, took the silver and bronze respectively.
