Although BSP won 20 seats in UP and one from Madhya Pradesh taking the total to 21, she was expecting 50-60 seats so that she could play the king- maker in the event of a hung house.
It may be mentioned that the social engineering formula, which worked well in the May 2007 elections with the BSP winning a majority on its own, did not click this time. This has annoyed Mayawati, who is upset with Brahmin leaders, too.
The style of functioning of the Chief Minister in the post-election period has disturbed senior party leaders. Mr. Sudheer Goel, who had worked with the party's founder Kanshi Ram, decided to quit the UP Vidhan Parishad despite being nominated by the party.
As part of her fault-finding mission, Mayawati dropped Cooperative Minister and state party chief Mr Swami Prasad Maurya from the ministry. Maurya, who had been defeated in assembly polls, lost the Lok Sabha poll as well from Kushinagar.
The Chief Minister also gave marching orders to four leaders on disciplinary grounds. They include former MLCs and MLAs who had defected to BSP recently. Those sacked were: former MLC Malik Masood Maya Prasad, Shivakant Ojha, Buniyad Husain Ansari and former MLC Heera Thakur.
Masood allegedly worked against BSP in the Lok Sabha elections. Buniyad Husain Ansari was named the party candidate from Sitapur. But when he was replaced by Kaiser Jehan, she too lodged her report with the BSP supremo. Heera Thakur was made MLC twice and given the responsibility to win over the barbar community. When he failed, he was shown the door.
Shviakant Ozha from Pratapgarh district, who had joined BSP from BJP, was removed when he lost the polls. Mayawati divested over 100 party leaders of the post of chairman and members of public sector undertakings as she found out that these leaders failed to ensure the victory of party candidates in their areas.
The BSP chief has also removed over 20 district magistrates and superintendents of police where BSP candidates were defeated.
A desperate Mayawati is now reverting to her Dalit agenda as she has realised that her slogan of Sarvsamaj has failed to enthuse the people into voting for BSP candidates.
Dalit leaders said though the Brahmins constituted only 7 per cent of the population, they were given 25 per cent of the tickets in the Lok Sabha polls. As against this, Dalits, who accounted for 22 per cent of the population, were given only 10 per cent tickets.
Having realised that she is losing the support of Dalits, Mayawati has directed her officers to look after the development of Harijan bastis and sort out their problems.
Mayawati said senior officers of the rank of DGP and Addl. cabinet secretary would visit the site of the crime where Dalits are victims and submit a report to the Chief Minister the same day.
In her address to the Ministers and senior bureaucrats, Mayawati has made it clear that she would take action if problems of Dalits were not attended properly. (IPA)
