Biden was telling the truth. Though the Democratic regime under his presidency had a few oligarchs who exercised lot of influence on the policies since they used to fund the Democratic Party, but never, the control was as pervasive as it is going to be now under Trump regime. It is becoming a government of the oligarchs, by the oligarchs and for the oligarchs.
The term oligarchs means the rule of a financially powerful few. Oligarchs are very rich, flush with investible funds which can be used to influence political parties and the governments to act in their favour. For the incoming U.S. President Donald Trump, the most influential oligarchs led by the Tesla CEO and the richest person in the world Elon Musk, has been mobilised. They are the eyes and ears of the incoming U.S. President. They are acting openly as advisers to the new U.S. administration.
Just look at the Monday’s inauguration preparations. A handful of capitalist billionaires have bought themselves control not only of inauguration of Trump but also control of his Cabinet, control of the policies of his incoming administration and control of the incoming president himself.
The figure of $200 million the billionaires are spending on the inauguration is only a preliminary one that is expected to grow, according to a body which has kept a running tally of the expenses. The brazen buying of a president, his administration and numerous other lawmakers will be a major concern of people descending in protest this weekend upon the nation’s capital, Massive protests are being planned in Washington D.C. on January 18 against this US regime change in favour of oligarchs. The U.S. labour unions and the women bodies are the major participants. They are all worried about their future under the Trump regime.
Most of the contributions of the rich and famous start at $1 million—and go up from there. If you want to be “cheap,” and donate perhaps only $100,000, all you get is a seat in the back of the church on January 19, the service the Trumps will attend. In church also, more you pay, more you will be closer to the Trump podium. Trump is ecstatic these days. He said in his social media that he was having a great time as everybody is donating and trying to be his friend.
As People’s World correspondent Mark Gruenberg writes ‘’Million-dollar donors get much more than just a seat in the back of the church: “An exclusive Cabinet Reception” with top Trump appointees, almost all of whom hail from the billionaire capitalist and corporate class, an “intimate dinner” with Vice President-elect J.D. Vance and a candlelight dinner with Trump. That costs $250,000 more.
“While the self-serving motivations of inaugural donors have a long and troubling precedent, the scope of donations and, in many cases, the fear of retribution driving the donations to the Trump-Vance Inaugural Committee represents a worrying shift,” says a commentator.
Meantime, all the group can do is compile the list and shine light on it. “Cryptocurrency firms and their CEOs have come out of the woodwork to embrace” Trump, who nominated a cryptocurrency CEO to be Commerce Secretary. The industry, which has nothing solid—like gold, silver or the U.S. Treasury—to back its funny money, expects “complete deregulation”. “Ripple has pledged $5 million for the inauguration, followed by $1 million each from Coinbase, Moonpay, Kraken and others,” a report says.
Some pre-Elon Musk, Silicon Valley moguls backed Democrats even while they oppressed their own workers. Now Meta/Google CEO Mark Zuckerberg and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have shelled out $1 million each to pay for Trump’s big bash. The big tech Silicon Valley CEOs are all lining up with big donations. Google was earlier threatened by Trump. The company has a high stake. The Indian origin Sunder Pichai is making all efforts to keep Trump and Musk in good humour.
Another $1 million came from Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos. He battles his workers, who are unionizing due to dangerous conditions in his warehouses. Bezos also gave Trump a pre-election “gift,” ordering the editorial board of the capital’s leading newspaper, the Washington Post, to stay neutral in the presidential race. And now the Washington-Baltimore News Guild, which represents the paper’s workers, is battling a round of layoffs the new Bezos-installed editor ordered.
The billionaires control the big media. Many of them earlier supported the Democrats. This time, excepting The New York Times, no big paper took position against trump. Bezos led Washington Post is changing its editorial line in favour of trump regime. Elon Musk has threatened that he will see how the liberal media survives in the coming years.
The big bulls of the Wall Street and the bank bosses and insurance chiefs who brought about the 2008 financial crisis are now the best friends of Trump-Musk team. They are hoping for policies that will help them in minting more money. So it is a new world in America now where the equality term enshrined in the U.S. constitution has lost its relevance.
