True, the party made a candid confession that the humiliating poll defeat was due to internal strife and gross indiscipline.

But what is significant is what it left unsaid.: that even the RSS workers were divided in their support to individual candidates put up by the BJP.

The result was total humiliation for the party - a repeat of the November 2008 Assembly election in which the Vasundhara Raje Scindia-led BJP government in the state was ousted from power.

The 'confession' of the state BJP came at the meeting of the party's Rajasthan unit held in Jaipur to discuss the reasons for the poll debacle.

Confessions apart, the party failed to fix responsibility for the failure on individuals who led the party in the electoral battle. True, Rajasthan BJP president O P Mathur owned up moral responsibility for the party's defeat and sent in his resignation to BJP president Rajnath Singh in the hope that others may follow suit.

Nothing of the sort happened. On the contrary, the leaders who were responsible for the party's rout in the state have been rewarded. Vasundhara's new position as the Leader of the Opposition is a shameful manifestation of this reprehensible approach of the party which is simply not interested in taking corrective action.

Another notable feature was that the meeting did not invite the party candidates who lost in the elections. Vasundhara herself was conspicuous by her absence. (IPA)
