The long-time opposition figure Michael Sata is the new President after narrowly defeating incumbent Rupiah Banda, according to media reports.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Mr. Ban commended Zambians for holding the ballot “in an environment that was overall peaceful and orderly,” and gave credit to the country’s electoral commission for the role it played in ensuring a credible and transparent election process.

Saying he “notes with satisfaction that today’s hand-over of power has been smooth and dignified,” Mr. Ban congratulated Mr. Sata on his success and praised Mr. Banda for his “message to the nation” in defeat.

“The Secretary-General is pleased that Zambians have today shown Africa and the world that change can be brought about peacefully when democracy is allowed to flourish.”
