The manner in which Mayawati has sacked her ministers recently on the charges of corruption and suspended her ‘tainted’ MLAs who joined other parties and got their membership cancelled, had demoralized the party MLAs.
Although Mayawati government appears to be in majority, but the number of those frustrated MLAs of BSP who want to quit the party is growing with each passing day.
It would be worth mentioning here that in May 2011, BSP had 226 MLAs but three MLAs of BSP have lost their membership recently so the effective strength has been reduced to 223.
In a House of total members 403 including one nominated, the effective strength for majority required is 202 and BSP has that number of MLAs.
But the manner in which Chief Minister Mayawati is busy in changing the tickets of her party MLAs and sacking her ministers in the name of fighting against corruption, her government could lose majority in the House. Chief Minister Mayawati has already taken action against more then 30 party MLAs as some of them were removed from their posts and their tickets were changed.
Majority of these MLAs are in touch with other political parties to negotiate for tickets to secure better future.
Although all these BSP MLAs who had been denied party tickets, are still with the party and have to follow party whip if required during winter session of the House but they can defy party instructions if assured tickets from other political parties and could create problem for BSP government.
It would be worth mentioning here that BSP has got membership cancelled of party MLAs Fareed Mehfuz Kidwai, Sher Bahadur Singh and Bhagwan Sharma alias Guddu Pandit. Besides these, two other MLAs Narain Singh and Horam are also facing action.
During recent months, four BSP MLAs Sandip Agarwal, Ashok Chandel, Madan Chuhan, and Sarvesh Kumar Singh joined Samajwadi Party and they all have been assured of SP tickets.
Although there is no need for summoning the House within six months of last sitting of the UP Assembly, but if the entire opposition mounts pressure on the state government to summon the house and prove the majority on some major issue, then government could be in trouble.
On the other hand, BSP sources rule out any threat to the Mayawati government and they claim that chief minister Mayawati enjoyed the majority and party would come back to power in 2012 assembly polls. (IPA)
