The visiting Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyal Wangchuk held comprehensive discussions with the Indian Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh here on Monday on a host of issues of mutual interest, according to the sources in the Prime Minister’s. Office (PMO)
India and Bhutan have traditionally close relations. India has been helping Thimpu in tapping its potential in hydro-power sector and is in the forefront in establishing some of the best hydro-power projects in the world in the Himalayan Kingdom.
According to the PMO, India has decided to import a minimum of 10,000 megawatts of electricity from Bhutan by 2020. In an effort to boost trade relations between the two countries, India has allowed 16 entry and exit points for Bhutanese traders.
The King had a packed schedule on Monday, as he exchanged views with the Vice-President, M Hamid Ansari, Minister of State for External Affairs, Preneet Kaur,
the leader of the Opposition, Sushma Swaraj Home Minister P Chidambaram and Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, ruling UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and the Foreign Secretary, Ranjan Mathai, Nation Security Adviser, Shivshankar Menon who called on him.
Earlier in the day he was accorded a ceremonial reception at the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhawan. Later he went to Rajghat to pay floral tributes to the father of the nation 'Mahatma Gandhi'. In the evening he met the President of India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil.
On Tuesday, the Chief of the Indian Army Staff called on the King Wangchuk. The Bhutanese King also paid a personal visit to the ruling UPA Chairperson, Sonia Gandhi at her 10, Janpath residence.
India has been supporting Bhutan 's move towards democracy. It is expected that the present visit of the King will give a fresh impetus to the relations between the two countries, paving the way for tapping full potential of commercial ties.
This is the first visit abroad of the new Bhutanese King after the Royal Wedding on October 13, 2011 and his fourth visit to India since his Coronation in November 2008.
He had earlier been on a State visit to India in December 2009. He was the Chief Guest at the Convocation Ceremony of the Kolkata University in October 2010. Also in October 2010 he was the Guest of Honour at the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the National Defence College, New Delhi, of which he is an alumnus.
It is, however, the first visit of Jetsun Pema Wangchuck as Queen of Bhutan. She tied the knot with the 31-year-old king at a colourful Buddhist ceremony at a 17th century monastery in the ancient capital of Punakha October 13. She is no stranger to India. She studied at Lawrence School, Sanawar and St Joseph's Convent in Kalimpong.in Darjeeling district of West Bengal.
The royal couple has chosen India as their destination for honeymoon. They will visit Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaypur in Rajasthan. The Indian government is pulling out all stops to fete the royal couple and is arranging a special train on the lines of the Palace on Wheels that will take them across Rajasthan.
